<p>2020 has thrown a lot at us. And while we’re sitting here wondering just how much more we can take, there are some positives that have come about from so much hardship.</p>

<div style="height:100px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p>We’ve become more active politically. We are way more aware of germs. We have had the chance to step back and take a closer look at our lives, at our mentality, at what we’ve been taught. We are shopping smarter, and we have realized that often the strongest impression we can make is with the money we spend.&nbsp;</p>

<div style="height:100px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p>I think that we’ve become a lot more weary of our conditioned need for instant-gratification and next-day delivery, and that too often the immediacy of purchases leads to a lack of consciousness about what we’re buying, why we’re buying it, and what it actually means for our lives and the world around us.</p>

<div style="height:100px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p>I want to know that the clothes and products that I’m spending my money on are doing more to help and less to hurt.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large is-resized"><img data-recalc-dims="1" decoding="async" loading="lazy" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.brooklynimtrying.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/Screen-Shot-2020-08-25-at-11.19.38-AM.png?resize=451%2C562" alt="" class="wp-image-9245" width="451" height="562" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/www.brooklynimtrying.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/Screen-Shot-2020-08-25-at-11.19.38-AM.png?resize=821%2C1024&amp;ssl=1 821w, https://i0.wp.com/www.brooklynimtrying.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/Screen-Shot-2020-08-25-at-11.19.38-AM.png?resize=241%2C300&amp;ssl=1 241w, https://i0.wp.com/www.brooklynimtrying.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/Screen-Shot-2020-08-25-at-11.19.38-AM.png?resize=768%2C958&amp;ssl=1 768w, https://i0.wp.com/www.brooklynimtrying.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/Screen-Shot-2020-08-25-at-11.19.38-AM.png?resize=600%2C748&amp;ssl=1 600w, https://i0.wp.com/www.brooklynimtrying.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/Screen-Shot-2020-08-25-at-11.19.38-AM.png?resize=655%2C817&amp;ssl=1 655w, https://i0.wp.com/www.brooklynimtrying.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/Screen-Shot-2020-08-25-at-11.19.38-AM.png?w=954&amp;ssl=1 954w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 451px) 100vw, 451px" /></figure></div>

<p>It was along this line of thinking that I happened to come across Claudia, the wonderful spirit behind Bajamar jewels.&nbsp;</p>

<div style="height:100px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p>Claudia is from Puerto Rico but has made NYC her home for 10 years now. Through a decade-long experience in the fashion industry, she’s been proud to make a career out of helping to source different materials and textiles and truly getting to the core of what our clothing and accessories are made from.</p>

<div style="height:100px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p>And then the pandemic hit.</p>

<div style="height:100px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p>Furloughed from her job but also taking time to recognize her own frustration with the corporate world, Claudia began to think of what she would do if she had the time and the ability to start her own company, now that suddenly, she did.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large is-resized"><img data-recalc-dims="1" decoding="async" data-attachment-id="9283" data-permalink="https://www.brooklynimtrying.com/profile-of-a-hustler-claudia-colon-amil-with-bajamar/img_3727-1/" data-orig-file="https://i0.wp.com/www.brooklynimtrying.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/IMG_3727-1-scaled.jpeg?fit=1920%2C2560&amp;ssl=1" data-orig-size="1920,2560" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-meta="{&quot;aperture&quot;:&quot;1.8&quot;,&quot;credit&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;camera&quot;:&quot;iPhone XR&quot;,&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;created_timestamp&quot;:&quot;1595703897&quot;,&quot;copyright&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;focal_length&quot;:&quot;4.25&quot;,&quot;iso&quot;:&quot;32&quot;,&quot;shutter_speed&quot;:&quot;0.0082644628099174&quot;,&quot;title&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;orientation&quot;:&quot;1&quot;}" data-image-title="IMG_3727-1" data-image-description="" data-image-caption="" data-medium-file="https://i0.wp.com/www.brooklynimtrying.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/IMG_3727-1-scaled.jpeg?fit=225%2C300&amp;ssl=1" data-large-file="https://i0.wp.com/www.brooklynimtrying.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/IMG_3727-1-scaled.jpeg?fit=768%2C1024&amp;ssl=1" loading="lazy" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.brooklynimtrying.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/IMG_3727-1.jpeg?resize=435%2C580" alt="" class="wp-image-9283" width="435" height="580" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/www.brooklynimtrying.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/IMG_3727-1-scaled.jpeg?resize=768%2C1024&amp;ssl=1 768w, https://i0.wp.com/www.brooklynimtrying.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/IMG_3727-1-scaled.jpeg?resize=225%2C300&amp;ssl=1 225w, https://i0.wp.com/www.brooklynimtrying.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/IMG_3727-1-scaled.jpeg?resize=600%2C800&amp;ssl=1 600w, https://i0.wp.com/www.brooklynimtrying.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/IMG_3727-1-scaled.jpeg?resize=1152%2C1536&amp;ssl=1 1152w, https://i0.wp.com/www.brooklynimtrying.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/IMG_3727-1-scaled.jpeg?resize=1536%2C2048&amp;ssl=1 1536w, https://i0.wp.com/www.brooklynimtrying.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/IMG_3727-1-scaled.jpeg?resize=655%2C873&amp;ssl=1 655w, https://i0.wp.com/www.brooklynimtrying.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/IMG_3727-1-scaled.jpeg?w=1920&amp;ssl=1 1920w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 435px) 100vw, 435px" /></figure></div>

<p>As her heart is never too far from her seaside community in Puerto Rico, she was also devastated to see a country that has been suffering so much recently taking yet another hit financially from the pandemic- and all of this still ahead of hurricane season.</p>

<div style="height:100px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p>She began to brainstorm a company that would create sustainable jewelry and accessories that could also help to rebuild the ocean environment like those she’d seen destroyed in Puerto Rico. She imagined pieces inspired by the sea, made from materials that were ethically sourced.</p>

<div style="height:100px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p>And after many long nights of researching and learning, planning and designing, and more than a little hair-pulling, Bajamar was born.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large is-resized"><img data-recalc-dims="1" decoding="async" loading="lazy" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.brooklynimtrying.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/IMG_7238.jpg?resize=487%2C365" alt="" class="wp-image-9240" width="487" height="365" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/www.brooklynimtrying.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/IMG_7238.jpg?resize=1024%2C768&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https://i0.wp.com/www.brooklynimtrying.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/IMG_7238.jpg?resize=300%2C225&amp;ssl=1 300w, https://i0.wp.com/www.brooklynimtrying.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/IMG_7238.jpg?resize=768%2C576&amp;ssl=1 768w, https://i0.wp.com/www.brooklynimtrying.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/IMG_7238.jpg?resize=600%2C450&amp;ssl=1 600w, https://i0.wp.com/www.brooklynimtrying.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/IMG_7238.jpg?resize=1536%2C1152&amp;ssl=1 1536w, https://i0.wp.com/www.brooklynimtrying.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/IMG_7238.jpg?resize=655%2C491&amp;ssl=1 655w, https://i0.wp.com/www.brooklynimtrying.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/IMG_7238.jpg?w=2048&amp;ssl=1 2048w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 487px) 100vw, 487px" /><figcaption>Liz decked out in Bajamar jewels</figcaption></figure></div>

<p>I first met Claudia at a restaurant in North Greenpoint. Her brightness was a breath of fresh air amid a city hidden behind face masks and now ever-more hesitant interactions, and she was noticeably perfectly accessorized.&nbsp;</p>

<div style="height:100px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p>After that initial meeting, I had a chance to sit down with her recently to learn more about how she was able to pivot her lifestyle from a career in fashion product development into an environmentally-conscious entrepreneur, what it has taken for her to build this side-hustle into a burgeoning business, and what she cares about most as the lead designer.&nbsp;</p>

<p><strong>Brooklyn, I’m Trying:</strong> When did you move to New York and what brought you to the city?</p>

<div style="height:100px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p><strong>Bajamar:</strong> I moved here from Puerto Rico right after High School, which was almost 10 years ago. I moved here to go to college and went to FIT to study Fashion Merchandising, with a minor in Apparel Product Development. From there I was able to work for a huge manufacturer out of Asia, helping source materials for licensed goods for Victoria Secret, Reebok, Adidas, lots of large companies… until I was placed on furlough in March.</p>

<div style="height:100px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p><strong>BIT:</strong> That probably wasn’t part of the plan, just like all of us.</p>

<div style="height:100px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p><strong>BM:</strong> Yeah this whole year has been a surprise.</p>

<div style="height:100px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p><strong>BIT:</strong> When you first moved here, what did you think you’d find here, and what did you actually find?</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large is-resized"><img data-recalc-dims="1" decoding="async" data-attachment-id="9272" data-permalink="https://www.brooklynimtrying.com/profile-of-a-hustler-claudia-colon-amil-with-bajamar/img_0598-2/" data-orig-file="https://i0.wp.com/www.brooklynimtrying.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/IMG_0598-scaled.jpeg?fit=2560%2C1920&amp;ssl=1" data-orig-size="2560,1920" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-meta="{&quot;aperture&quot;:&quot;1.8&quot;,&quot;credit&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;camera&quot;:&quot;iPhone XR&quot;,&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;created_timestamp&quot;:&quot;1591529098&quot;,&quot;copyright&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;focal_length&quot;:&quot;4.25&quot;,&quot;iso&quot;:&quot;25&quot;,&quot;shutter_speed&quot;:&quot;0.0001850138760407&quot;,&quot;title&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;orientation&quot;:&quot;1&quot;}" data-image-title="IMG_0598" data-image-description="" data-image-caption="" data-medium-file="https://i0.wp.com/www.brooklynimtrying.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/IMG_0598-scaled.jpeg?fit=300%2C225&amp;ssl=1" data-large-file="https://i0.wp.com/www.brooklynimtrying.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/IMG_0598-scaled.jpeg?fit=1024%2C768&amp;ssl=1" loading="lazy" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.brooklynimtrying.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/IMG_0598.jpeg?resize=520%2C390" alt="" class="wp-image-9272" width="520" height="390" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/www.brooklynimtrying.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/IMG_0598-scaled.jpeg?resize=1024%2C768&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https://i0.wp.com/www.brooklynimtrying.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/IMG_0598-scaled.jpeg?resize=300%2C225&amp;ssl=1 300w, https://i0.wp.com/www.brooklynimtrying.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/IMG_0598-scaled.jpeg?resize=768%2C576&amp;ssl=1 768w, https://i0.wp.com/www.brooklynimtrying.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/IMG_0598-scaled.jpeg?resize=600%2C450&amp;ssl=1 600w, https://i0.wp.com/www.brooklynimtrying.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/IMG_0598-scaled.jpeg?resize=1536%2C1152&amp;ssl=1 1536w, https://i0.wp.com/www.brooklynimtrying.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/IMG_0598-scaled.jpeg?resize=2048%2C1536&amp;ssl=1 2048w, https://i0.wp.com/www.brooklynimtrying.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/IMG_0598-scaled.jpeg?resize=655%2C491&amp;ssl=1 655w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 520px) 100vw, 520px" /><figcaption>A collection inspired by the sea. <p><strong>BM:</strong> That’s a funny question. I’ve always wanted to move to the city. When I was a model when I was 12 and when my Mom brought me here with my agent for the first time, I was blown away by it. It was my first time being in a big metropolitan city. I told my mom, “I’m going to go to college here,” and a few years later, I applied, got into FIT, came here to live and within about 2 hours I realized that I’m not a city girl at all. It was so loud, so dirty, and I missed the kindness and warmth I felt from people in Puerto Rico.</p>

<div style="height:100px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p><strong>BIT:</strong> Do you still feel that way?</p>

<div style="height:100px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p><strong>BM:</strong> I’ve kind of adapted. Now I’m used to it, even though it’s been a switch in the way I wanted to live. It was a whole new world for me. Even now 10 years later, I wouldn’t want to live here forever, but it’s a great place to grow up and get those amazing life experiences that you can’t have anywhere else.</p>

<div style="height:100px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p><strong>BIT:</strong> How has where you live affected that?</p>

<div style="height:100px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p><strong>BM:</strong> Brooklyn is a different story. People greet each other here. The only reason we had an interaction is because you spoke to me and we made a connection. That only happens in a small neighborhood like Greenpoint.</p>

<div style="height:100px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p><strong>BIT:</strong> How do you define “hustle” throughout your career, and into this new venture?</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large is-resized"><img data-recalc-dims="1" decoding="async" data-attachment-id="9262" data-permalink="https://www.brooklynimtrying.com/profile-of-a-hustler-claudia-colon-amil-with-bajamar/fullsizerender-4/" data-orig-file="https://i0.wp.com/www.brooklynimtrying.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/FullSizeRender-scaled.jpeg?fit=2560%2C1920&amp;ssl=1" data-orig-size="2560,1920" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-meta="{&quot;aperture&quot;:&quot;1.8&quot;,&quot;credit&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;camera&quot;:&quot;iPhone XR&quot;,&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;created_timestamp&quot;:&quot;1589997862&quot;,&quot;copyright&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;focal_length&quot;:&quot;4.25&quot;,&quot;iso&quot;:&quot;160&quot;,&quot;shutter_speed&quot;:&quot;0.016666666666667&quot;,&quot;title&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;orientation&quot;:&quot;0&quot;}" data-image-title="FullSizeRender" data-image-description="" data-image-caption="" data-medium-file="https://i0.wp.com/www.brooklynimtrying.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/FullSizeRender-scaled.jpeg?fit=300%2C225&amp;ssl=1" data-large-file="https://i0.wp.com/www.brooklynimtrying.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/FullSizeRender-scaled.jpeg?fit=1024%2C768&amp;ssl=1" loading="lazy" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.brooklynimtrying.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/FullSizeRender.jpeg?resize=508%2C381" alt="" class="wp-image-9262" width="508" height="381" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/www.brooklynimtrying.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/FullSizeRender-scaled.jpeg?resize=1024%2C768&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https://i0.wp.com/www.brooklynimtrying.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/FullSizeRender-scaled.jpeg?resize=300%2C225&amp;ssl=1 300w, https://i0.wp.com/www.brooklynimtrying.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/FullSizeRender-scaled.jpeg?resize=768%2C576&amp;ssl=1 768w, https://i0.wp.com/www.brooklynimtrying.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/FullSizeRender-scaled.jpeg?resize=600%2C450&amp;ssl=1 600w, https://i0.wp.com/www.brooklynimtrying.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/FullSizeRender-scaled.jpeg?resize=1536%2C1152&amp;ssl=1 1536w, https://i0.wp.com/www.brooklynimtrying.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/FullSizeRender-scaled.jpeg?resize=2048%2C1536&amp;ssl=1 2048w, https://i0.wp.com/www.brooklynimtrying.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/FullSizeRender-scaled.jpeg?resize=655%2C491&amp;ssl=1 655w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 508px) 100vw, 508px" /><figcaption>A day in the life of a maker via <a href="https://www.instagram.com/bajamarstudio/">@bajamarstudio</a></figcaption></figure></div>

<p><strong>BM:</strong> (laughing) I would say my entire career has been a hustle. I’m sure you can relate, having a background in fashion. I mean, the internship experience was insane, I came from a small university so it’s very competitive to get a job.</p>

<div style="height:100px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p>Now with Bajamar, every day is a hustle to the point that, to me, it’s exciting and also surprises me every time when I see the outcome. I go in every day with a mindset and with a goal, and sometimes it does happen but unfolds in ways that I didn&#8217;t expect it to happen. Things align in ways you never plan to, at the end of the road, you get to the same place but with a different path. It’s exciting, yet frustrating at times creating your own business. It’s a leap of faith and you have to give it your best shot every day.</p>

<div style="height:100px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p><strong>BIT:</strong> Tell me about Bajamar. What is the inspiration behind it?</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large is-resized"><img data-recalc-dims="1" decoding="async" data-attachment-id="9273" data-permalink="https://www.brooklynimtrying.com/profile-of-a-hustler-claudia-colon-amil-with-bajamar/img_1379/" data-orig-file="https://i0.wp.com/www.brooklynimtrying.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/IMG_1379-scaled.jpeg?fit=1920%2C2560&amp;ssl=1" data-orig-size="1920,2560" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-meta="{&quot;aperture&quot;:&quot;1.8&quot;,&quot;credit&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;camera&quot;:&quot;iPhone XR&quot;,&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;created_timestamp&quot;:&quot;1592581986&quot;,&quot;copyright&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;focal_length&quot;:&quot;4.25&quot;,&quot;iso&quot;:&quot;160&quot;,&quot;shutter_speed&quot;:&quot;0.016666666666667&quot;,&quot;title&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;orientation&quot;:&quot;1&quot;}" data-image-title="IMG_1379" data-image-description="" data-image-caption="" data-medium-file="https://i0.wp.com/www.brooklynimtrying.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/IMG_1379-scaled.jpeg?fit=225%2C300&amp;ssl=1" data-large-file="https://i0.wp.com/www.brooklynimtrying.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/IMG_1379-scaled.jpeg?fit=768%2C1024&amp;ssl=1" loading="lazy" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.brooklynimtrying.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/IMG_1379.jpeg?resize=436%2C581" alt="" class="wp-image-9273" width="436" height="581" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/www.brooklynimtrying.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/IMG_1379-scaled.jpeg?resize=768%2C1024&amp;ssl=1 768w, https://i0.wp.com/www.brooklynimtrying.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/IMG_1379-scaled.jpeg?resize=225%2C300&amp;ssl=1 225w, https://i0.wp.com/www.brooklynimtrying.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/IMG_1379-scaled.jpeg?resize=600%2C800&amp;ssl=1 600w, https://i0.wp.com/www.brooklynimtrying.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/IMG_1379-scaled.jpeg?resize=1152%2C1536&amp;ssl=1 1152w, https://i0.wp.com/www.brooklynimtrying.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/IMG_1379-scaled.jpeg?resize=1536%2C2048&amp;ssl=1 1536w, https://i0.wp.com/www.brooklynimtrying.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/IMG_1379-scaled.jpeg?resize=655%2C873&amp;ssl=1 655w, https://i0.wp.com/www.brooklynimtrying.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/IMG_1379-scaled.jpeg?w=1920&amp;ssl=1 1920w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 436px) 100vw, 436px" /><figcaption>The birth of an idea and brand via <a href="https://www.instagram.com/bajamarstudio/">@bajamarstudio</a></figcaption></figure></div>

<p><strong>BM:</strong> Bajamar came to be after I was furloughed during the pandemic and I found myself sitting on my couch with a feeling of abandonment after putting so many years into the corporate hustle. I realized then that I can put all of that dedication and passion into something of my own making. I asked my boyfriend (quick update from BIT: now <em>fiancee</em>) of all the things I need to improve, what is one quality I should focus on during this time?</p>

<div style="height:100px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p>His response was one word, “initiative”, but that was all I needed to hear. The next day I started brainstorming like crazy and by the end of the day, I committed to creating a sustainable brand that gives back, by making handcrafted jewelry with hopes of adding clothing products later on &#8211; a dream I have always kept on the back burner but was finally resolved to action. In my industry, most brands are not known for being eco-friendly or having those industry standards. And that’s important to me.</p>

<div style="height:100px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p><strong>BIT:</strong> And then Bajamar was born.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large is-resized"><img data-recalc-dims="1" decoding="async" data-attachment-id="9259" data-permalink="https://www.brooklynimtrying.com/profile-of-a-hustler-claudia-colon-amil-with-bajamar/screen-shot-2020-09-03-at-12-56-51-pm/" data-orig-file="https://i0.wp.com/www.brooklynimtrying.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/Screen-Shot-2020-09-03-at-12.56.51-PM.png?fit=1194%2C830&amp;ssl=1" data-orig-size="1194,830" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-meta="{&quot;aperture&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;credit&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;camera&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;created_timestamp&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;copyright&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;focal_length&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;iso&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;shutter_speed&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;title&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;orientation&quot;:&quot;0&quot;}" data-image-title="Screen-Shot-2020-09-03-at-12.56.51-PM" data-image-description="" data-image-caption="" data-medium-file="https://i0.wp.com/www.brooklynimtrying.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/Screen-Shot-2020-09-03-at-12.56.51-PM.png?fit=300%2C209&amp;ssl=1" data-large-file="https://i0.wp.com/www.brooklynimtrying.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/Screen-Shot-2020-09-03-at-12.56.51-PM.png?fit=1024%2C712&amp;ssl=1" loading="lazy" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.brooklynimtrying.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/Screen-Shot-2020-09-03-at-12.56.51-PM.png?resize=502%2C349" alt="" class="wp-image-9259" width="502" height="349" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/www.brooklynimtrying.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/Screen-Shot-2020-09-03-at-12.56.51-PM.png?resize=1024%2C712&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https://i0.wp.com/www.brooklynimtrying.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/Screen-Shot-2020-09-03-at-12.56.51-PM.png?resize=300%2C209&amp;ssl=1 300w, https://i0.wp.com/www.brooklynimtrying.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/Screen-Shot-2020-09-03-at-12.56.51-PM.png?resize=768%2C534&amp;ssl=1 768w, https://i0.wp.com/www.brooklynimtrying.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/Screen-Shot-2020-09-03-at-12.56.51-PM.png?resize=600%2C417&amp;ssl=1 600w, https://i0.wp.com/www.brooklynimtrying.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/Screen-Shot-2020-09-03-at-12.56.51-PM.png?resize=655%2C455&amp;ssl=1 655w, https://i0.wp.com/www.brooklynimtrying.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/Screen-Shot-2020-09-03-at-12.56.51-PM.png?w=1194&amp;ssl=1 1194w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 502px) 100vw, 502px" /><figcaption>The collection via <a href="https://www.instagram.com/bajamarstudio/">@bajamarstudio</a></figcaption></figure></div>

<p><strong>BM:</strong> (laughing) yes, something like that.</p>

<div style="height:100px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p><strong>BIT:</strong> Did you have a moment where you realized, &#8220;Holy shit, this is actually happening?”</p>

<div style="height:100px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p><strong>BM:</strong> Yes, that point hit me sometime in May. I had worked day and night for a month, which was sometime in April. I had brainstormed the brand, started ordering materials to work on prototypes. I spent 2 months really digging into and studying heavily, really working on how to create a business. By May I was ready to go, I put up the website, and by May 17th I just launched. I started doing sneak peeks on Instagram and sent out prototypes and the feedback was crazy. That same day I was asked about how to order, where can I buy, what are the prices, things like that. And now everything has happened and I have a business- now it’s end of July… somehow everything has happened in just 3 months.</p>

<p><strong>BIT:</strong> That must feel amazing.</p>

<p><strong>BM:</strong> It’s overwhelming for sure. There is always lot of things to do. I’m a perfectionist so I always think I could have done things a little bit different… but honestly now, I wouldn’t change a thing. It feels great to do build something of your own and to make a product that people can feel good about wearing.&nbsp;</p>

<div style="height:100px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p><strong>BIT:</strong> Sounds like you went about it the right way.</p>

<div style="height:100px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p><strong>BM:</strong> In my corporate job, my specialty was textile and material innovation. I saw everything in the testing stage. I would find a new fabric, like a plant-based polyester or bamboo that also wicks, is antimicrobial, etc. I used that for my materials but also for my packaging- I wanted to make sure everything was reusable and sustainable. So my professional background really helped me but I still had to do a lot of studying and learning during the first month or so.&nbsp;</p>

<p><strong>BIT:</strong> What is one reality about starting your own business that you were surprised to learn?</p>

<div style="height:100px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p><strong>BM:</strong> (laughing) Oh my god, there are so many! That’s a really hard question. I guess just the amount of work and the amount of detail that it takes to start your own business by yourself. In my corporate job, my responsibility was only for the product development process. When managing your own business, it’s everything. Finances, accounting, sourcing materials, meetings, deadlines, the website, photo shoots&#8230; it’s everything. I don’t think anybody realizes how much work you have to put into it especially if it’s just yourself. It’s a lot of hard work, a lot of long hours. I’ve learned so much about the business side now that I’m the one handling it. I don’t have an accounting department… So it’s like a huge wave of paperwork and things that you have to know, all with deadlines. It was kind of a big slap in the face to have so many insane responsibilities. It’s a lot of hard work you have to do yourself because nobody else is gonna do it.</p>

<div style="height:100px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p><strong>BIT:</strong> Right, so you can’t cut corners at all.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large is-resized"><img data-recalc-dims="1" decoding="async" data-attachment-id="9275" data-permalink="https://www.brooklynimtrying.com/profile-of-a-hustler-claudia-colon-amil-with-bajamar/img_3888/" data-orig-file="https://i0.wp.com/www.brooklynimtrying.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/IMG_3888.jpeg?fit=750%2C750&amp;ssl=1" data-orig-size="750,750" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-meta="{&quot;aperture&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;credit&quot;:&quot;shopbajamar&quot;,&quot;camera&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;{\&quot;subsource\&quot;:\&quot;done_button\&quot;,\&quot;uid\&quot;:\&quot;EE63BF24-150E-4D66-BCA5-2072A6701DBF_1595843902016\&quot;,\&quot;source\&quot;:\&quot;other\&quot;,\&quot;origin\&quot;:\&quot;gallery\&quot;,\&quot;source_sid\&quot;:\&quot;EE63BF24-150E-4D66-BCA5-2072A6701DBF_1595843902021\&quot;}&quot;,&quot;created_timestamp&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;copyright&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;focal_length&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;iso&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;shutter_speed&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;title&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;orientation&quot;:&quot;1&quot;}" data-image-title="IMG_3888" data-image-description="" data-image-caption="&lt;p&gt;{&amp;#8220;subsource&amp;#8221;:&amp;#8221;done_button&amp;#8221;,&amp;#8221;uid&amp;#8221;:&amp;#8221;EE63BF24-150E-4D66-BCA5-2072A6701DBF_1595843902016&amp;#8243;,&amp;#8221;source&amp;#8221;:&amp;#8221;other&amp;#8221;,&amp;#8221;origin&amp;#8221;:&amp;#8221;gallery&amp;#8221;,&amp;#8221;source_sid&amp;#8221;:&amp;#8221;EE63BF24-150E-4D66-BCA5-2072A6701DBF_1595843902021&amp;#8243;}&lt;/p&gt;

<p><strong>BM:</strong> There is so much to learn. And also, you have to be ready to put in money if you want to do things right… which was a little overwhelming for me. I was thinking, oh my gosh, am I doing this right, should I be investing money in a company so new? You definitely have to do things premeditated and also take educated, measurable risks. You have to decide when to start, how to do it, and then you have to do all of it. Once you dive in, you can’t take your foot out.&nbsp;</p>

<div style="height:100px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p><strong>BIT:</strong> How do you balance trying to do the whole branding thing? Define Bajamar as a brand.</p>

<div style="height:100px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p><strong>BM:</strong> Bajamar is all about creating pieces that are not just handcrafted and sustainable, but my aim is that when people where them, that they can express that they are a vehicle of change and ecological awareness. We need to be aware of our environment. Everything that I make is sustainable and ethically sourced. Our silk cuffs are fair-trade or recycled. I’ve also been using things that are often thrown in the sea and putting them to good use and making them beautiful to let people know that hey, we have too much waste in our oceans. We have to be conscious of the extraction of pearls and mindful of the affect that has on the environment.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large is-resized"><img data-recalc-dims="1" decoding="async" loading="lazy" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.brooklynimtrying.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/Screen-Shot-2020-08-24-at-1.35.07-PM.png?resize=440%2C438" alt="" class="wp-image-9242" width="440" height="438" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/www.brooklynimtrying.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/Screen-Shot-2020-08-24-at-1.35.07-PM.png?resize=1024%2C1021&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https://i0.wp.com/www.brooklynimtrying.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/Screen-Shot-2020-08-24-at-1.35.07-PM.png?resize=300%2C300&amp;ssl=1 300w, https://i0.wp.com/www.brooklynimtrying.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/Screen-Shot-2020-08-24-at-1.35.07-PM.png?resize=150%2C150&amp;ssl=1 150w, https://i0.wp.com/www.brooklynimtrying.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/Screen-Shot-2020-08-24-at-1.35.07-PM.png?resize=768%2C765&amp;ssl=1 768w, https://i0.wp.com/www.brooklynimtrying.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/Screen-Shot-2020-08-24-at-1.35.07-PM.png?resize=100%2C100&amp;ssl=1 100w, https://i0.wp.com/www.brooklynimtrying.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/Screen-Shot-2020-08-24-at-1.35.07-PM.png?resize=600%2C598&amp;ssl=1 600w, https://i0.wp.com/www.brooklynimtrying.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/Screen-Shot-2020-08-24-at-1.35.07-PM.png?resize=75%2C75&amp;ssl=1 75w, https://i0.wp.com/www.brooklynimtrying.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/Screen-Shot-2020-08-24-at-1.35.07-PM.png?resize=655%2C653&amp;ssl=1 655w, https://i0.wp.com/www.brooklynimtrying.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/Screen-Shot-2020-08-24-at-1.35.07-PM.png?resize=180%2C180&amp;ssl=1 180w, https://i0.wp.com/www.brooklynimtrying.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/Screen-Shot-2020-08-24-at-1.35.07-PM.png?w=1198&amp;ssl=1 1198w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 440px) 100vw, 440px" /><figcaption>Bajamar starts with beautiful, sustainable materials. Photo borrowed from <a href="https://www.instagram.com/bajamarstudio/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">@bajamarstudio</a></figcaption></figure></div>

<p>Now, as far styling and all of that, I try to make it as fashionable as I can. Bajamar pieces are beautiful but also casual and modern. You can wear them to work but also to a bar or out at night. The style should go seamless with your lifestyle, but also express that you are a vehicle for change everywhere you go.</p>

<div style="height:100px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p><strong>BIT:</strong> I know part of the inspiration for your focus on sustainability comes from your Dad. Can you tell me about that?</p>

<div style="height:100px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p><strong>BM:</strong> A percentage of all sales are donated to ocean-dedicated charities. The reason why, and also part of what birthed what Bajamar is today, was seeing my father clean our hometown beach in Puerto Rico, which had become neglected and covered in waste. He cleaned it weekly, all on his own and in his spare time outside of work and now the beach is completely revitalized. Others are able to come enjoy it because of his efforts. Inspired by this, I wanted to do something that covers Bajamar’s footprint and more. Each month we select a new charity in honor of people like my father who are working to save our oceans.&nbsp;</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter"><img data-recalc-dims="1" decoding="async" loading="lazy" src="https://i0.wp.com/cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0260/3175/1264/files/IMG_9498_8d6b7f5e-5f8d-465c-995d-43cd53a5f71e_300x300.jpeg?ssl=1" alt=""/><figcaption>Claudia&#8217;s Dad, Ramon, has been a huge inspiration for building a brand that gives back to the environment.</figcaption></figure></div>

<div style="height:100px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p><strong>BIT:</strong> How do you maintain energy in your craft and push through periods of frustration?&nbsp;</p>

<div style="height:100px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p><strong>BM:</strong> Hmmmm… ah that’s a tough one. Well, I guess I always put in a little bit of fun (laughing). I love to laugh but believe it or not, I’m very devoted to my work especially when I&#8217;m doing it for me. I do get frustrated, but I tell myself to keep trying, keep trying, until I realize I just need to laugh at myself and just chill a little bit. Relax. Start brand new tomorrow. I tell myself, &#8216;you’re going down this path and you’re so blessed;&nbsp; life is not so tough.&#8217; If I need to, I just have a glass of wine and relax.</p>

<div style="height:100px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p><strong>BIT:</strong> Tell us what you are working on now and about your vision for the future.</p>

<div style="height:100px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p><strong>BM:</strong> My vision for the future I would say is to keep growing, but to keep creating a community more than having retailers and stores putting in orders. My goal isn’t just to make Bajamar a hip brand with fashion bloggers, hopefully that will come in time, but for now, Bajamar is really not about making profits but about making a community that will be aware of what you’re buying, where it came from and where it’s going. If I can create a community where our mission is connected to our surroundings and our behavior, then that’s really the main goal I have for the next year. The rest I feel will come with time, but creating a conscious community is really what I’m going for.&nbsp;</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Thrive Causemetics Liquid Lash Extension Mascara </strong></h3>

<p>I know, I know. I fall in love with mascaras and vow it will be the last time fairly often. But this time… this time it’s different. I have never, ever, used a more perfect mascara, and it’s not even available at Sephora. Thrive Causemetics has created a wildly innovative new formula that fully coats your lashes in a tube, thickening and extending them without clumping. Lash Extension rivals any $200 extension process, stays put all day and night, and best of all, comes off in little lashy tubes when you remove it; no smudgy raccoon eyes. Oh yeah, and also, they use 100% organic ingredients AND they donated a portion of every sale to help <a rel="noreferrer noopener" aria-label="all of these women’s causes (opens in a new tab)" href="https://thrivecausemetics.com/pages/how-we-give" target="_blank">all of these women’s causes</a>. This is the holy grail of mascaras, from a company that gives a damn. I cannot say enough. Stop everything. Buy it <a href="https://thrivecausemetics.com/products/liquid-lash-extensions-mascara" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener" aria-label="here (opens in a new tab)">here</a> now.  </p>

<div style="height:100px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Sorella Watermelon Mint Hydrating Mist </strong></h3>

<p>Can a spray really do that much? I didn’t think so. Until I started using this fresh, tingly, and mega-hydrating miracle product from Sorella. This has been the only product I’ve ever used to visibly reduce the size of my pores. Sorella is a 100% natural, and … while they (and I) encourage you to visit a licensed aesthetician to find what products are best for your skin type, if you (like me) realize that your skin isn’t dry but usually dehydrated, this product is for you. Spray it on after cleansing and to wake skin up in the morning. Your skin will develop a smooth, natural glow that has convinced me to happily do away with any base layer whatsoever. Get it <a href="https://www.artofskincare.com/sorella-apothecary-watermelon-mint-hydrating-mist/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener" aria-label="here (opens in a new tab)">here</a>.  </p>

<div style="height:100px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Davines SOLU Sea Salt Scrub Cleanser</strong></h3>

<p>The thing about dry shampoo is that it builds up. By day 6 my hair is basically dragging me out of bed, making me breakfast, and writing my to-do lists. And as much as I love big, bold hair, I can’t have it overpowering me. Get rid of the build-up in one wash AND make your roots forget they have ever been masked at all. This life-giving salt scrub by my favorite Italian hair company helps forgive me of all my follicle sins, and feels damn good too. I get mine from <a rel="noreferrer noopener" aria-label="Zoe’s (opens in a new tab)" href="https://zoesbeauty.com" target="_blank">Zoe’s</a> but if you’re not in Brooklyn, order it here.  </p>

<div style="height:100px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Davines Oi Oil </strong></h3>

<p>Normally I would sy away from adding any type of unnecessary oil to my hair (see below). But this line of “absolute beautifying” smooths hair without weighing it down, and convinced all my split ends to get back together. A little goes a very long way, so don’t get greedy. Get yours at <a rel="noreferrer noopener" aria-label="Zoe’s (opens in a new tab)" href="https://zoesbeauty.com" target="_blank">Zoe’s</a> in Greenpoint, or <a href="https://us.davines.com/products/oi-oil" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener" aria-label="here (opens in a new tab)">here</a>. Or I guess in Italy, where it’s made. That’s way cooler.  </p>

<div style="height:100px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Living Proof Perfect Hair Day Dry Shampoo </strong></h3>

<p>Ok, ok if you can trust me about anything, let it be this. I’ve been out in the field. I’ve been desperate. And by now, I’ve saved probably 800 hours that I used to spend shampooing and styling with a quick and effective dry alternative that not only gets rid of oil, but leaves hair lively and full, day after day. I’ve tried nearly every dry shampoo out there. This is the Mecca of dry shampoos. I get it monthly at <a href="https://zoesbeauty.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener" aria-label="Zoe’s (opens in a new tab)">Zoe’s</a>, or get yours here. </p>

<div style="height:100px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Bare Minerals One Fine Line Eyeliner </strong></h3>

<p>Let me get to the point here. I hate dealing with smudgy eyeliner sharpeners but have never found a retractable liner that is exact enough to pay attention to. Everything changed when I was recommended this tiny little tube from the lovely ladies at Zoe’s in Greenpoint. It provides just enough coverage and stays put, helping me look sharp all day. Get yours here now.</p>

<div style="height:100px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p> Oh, and the other contents of my <a rel="noreferrer noopener" aria-label="favorite new tote (opens in a new tab)" href="https://www.brooklynairlines.com" target="_blank">favorite new tote</a>? Women Who Run With the Wolves, this great notebook full of Wild Ideas from <a href="https://www.instagram.com/lockwoodstyle/?hl=en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener" aria-label="Lockwood (opens in a new tab)">Lockwood</a> in Greenpoint, these amazing <a rel="noreferrer noopener" aria-label="Nectar sunglasses (opens in a new tab)" href="https://www.nectarsunglasses.com/" target="_blank">Nectar sunglasses</a>, and my <a rel="noreferrer noopener" aria-label="trusty travel companion (opens in a new tab)" href="http://www.brooklynimtrying.com/elephant-always-tale-talisman/" target="_blank">trusty travel companion</a>.  </p>

<div style="height:100px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p>Don&#8217;t hate leaving New York, Brooklyn. Just do it in style.</p>

That sun-kissed, fresh face turns into a greyish, sullen, bitter countenance that will hang heavy all season. This doesn’t mean that we hide away all winter, shutting down our dating apps and hiding behind ski masks; no no- it just means that our beauty routine must evolve.</div>
<div></div>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<div>Which reminds me that what I love about beauty is the same thing that I hate about it. My commitments and devotions to products run deep. The hesitance I feel when sliding on a new mascara for the first time that I know couldn’t possible match up to my tried-and-true, and then realizing, without blinking an eye, that what I thought didn’t exist is staring me right in the face. A better mascara. A better, faster, smoother, bolder, more intense mascara that leaves my old faithful in the dust(bin) immediately. I love and hate the feeling. It’s the most gratifying betrayal.</div>
<div></div>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<div>And my excitement is faced with fear; if I can’t be certain that even this is the best product I’ve ever used, what the hell can I be sure of?</div>
<div></div>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<div>I can be sure that my search will never end.</div>
<div></div>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<div>For now I’ll share with you my new essentials and the ones that have joined the team just for the season. Here is my steadfast group of standby’s that, at least for now, I pledge my full-faced devotion to, and where to buy them.</div>

<h4><strong>FACE</strong></h4>
<h3><strong>GlamGlow Glowstarter Mega Illuminating Moisturizer</strong></h3>
<div>First things first. You can’t expect to fake that summer glow without a steadfast moisturizer that will stay with you all day. Glam Glow’s Glowstarter gives you that post-sex glow that is basically impossible to imitate (which is why I recommend both, the sex and the product). The thick formula goes on smooth and is the best first line of defense against the winter drabs. Wear it alone or accompanied by all of the other things I’m about to tell you about. I opted for the travel size; get your full size $49 from Sephora <a href="https://www.sephora.com/product/glowstarter-mega-illuminating-moisturizer-P408739" target="_blank" rel="noopener">here</a>.</div>
<div></div>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<div></div>
<h3><strong>Makeup Forever Ultra HD Foundation</strong></h3>
<div>In the warmer months, I’m a devotee to Laura Mercier’s tinted moisturizer. I’ve always hated a mask-y look on the face, and most foundations dull your skin’s natural brightness. Not this one. Leave it up to a former French cabaret artist to come up with the perfect formula to last all day and look fantastic under any light. Makeup Forever’s Ultra HD is the most natural looking foundation I’ve found, and the microscopic illuminators don’t stop until you do. And we all know you don’t. Buy yours from the source <a href="https://www.makeupforever.com/us/en-us/make-up/face/foundation/ultra-hd-foundation" target="_blank" rel="noopener">here</a> for $43.</div>
<div></div>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<h3></h3>
<h3><strong>IT Cosmetics Bye Bye Under Eye Illumination Concealer</strong></h3>
<div>Our bright summer skin fades in the winter and inevitably we all look a little more sullen, tired, weathered from the weather. My secret weapon is this thick, waterproof (I know I’m not the only one whose eyes water in the wind), anti-aging, under-eye illuminator goes on thick, stays on long, and make your eyes pop even without mascara. Plus a little goes a very long way so don’t fret over the price tag. Get it for $24 <a href="https://www.sephora.com/product/bye-bye-under-eye-full-coverage-anti-aging-waterproof-concealer-P411391" target="_blank" rel="noopener">here</a> from Sephora.</div>
<div></div>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<div></div>
<h3><strong>Smashbox Matte Contour Palette</strong></h3>
<div>Ok, I know. This is basically cheating. But it’s also the best way to add definition and bring attention to an often lifeless, wintery face. I just watched this super simple tutorial <a href="https://www.sephora.com/product/step-by-step-contour-kit-P387426" target="_blank" rel="noopener">video</a> on Sephora&#8217;s site and boom, my face looked better with a few flicks of my wrist. The colors are matte so you don’t end up looking shiny and prostitute-y like those fake bitches you like to make fun of on Instagram, but I do like sprinkling a little resplendent highlighter on my cheekbones and nose bridge as the piece de resistance. Get your palette at Zoe’s in Greenpoint or <a href="https://www.sephora.com/product/step-by-step-contour-kit-P387426" target="_blank" rel="noopener">here</a> for $35 now.</div>

<h4><strong>EYES</strong></h4>
<h3><strong>Buxom Mascara</strong></h3>
<div>This is why I’m so thankful to have a neighborhood makeup store. If Ivwas only every shopping from my Sephora app, I would have never been personally handed a travel size of this bold little newcomer with a wink and a smile, “It’s new,” she told me. “Just try it,” all the while knowing she was about to alter my beauty routine and belief in makeup monogamy forever. Three weeks later, I was back for another fix. The brush alone looks like a technological masterpiece; varying heights and thicknesses of sturdy Little silicone strands that grab, pull, and coat every lash leaving me in wide-eyed disbelief as I stare back at myself every morning in the mirror. The brand is Bare Minerals bolder, more seductive little sister and is only sold in select stores. Which is reason number 36763 why I fucking love Greenpoint, and Zoe’s Beauty. Or <a href="https://www.sephora.com/product/buxom-lash-mascara-P228204" target="_blank" rel="noopener">here</a> for $22.</div>

<h3><strong>Urban Decay Perversion Mascara</strong></h3>
<div>Ok, I know. What the fuck, now I’m talking about two different mascaras in the same post. Let me explain. Buxom will change your lashes and your life, however, you have to work a bit for it. The silicone bristles naturally don’t hold that much mascara juice (what is it anyway? (don’t answer that)), and so if I’m in a hurry, I reach for the big old bushy teddy bear brush inside my Urban Decay Perversion. In just one layer I have thick, bold lashes. No primer needed. If you want perfection, grab the Buxom. For a quick fix, Perversion is your girl. Get it <a href="https://www.sephora.com/product/perversion-mascara-P387956?icid2=products%20grid:p387956:product" target="_blank" rel="noopener">here</a> for $24.</div>
<div></div>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<div></div>
<h3><strong>Benefit They’re Real Lash Primer</strong></h3>
<div>Do I need to settle this debate once and for all? Lash primer isn’t necessary, but it does make a big difference. Duh. It gives your lashes that initial separation, definition, and positioning they need to be perfectly masked. Kind of like how high heels were invented to make you look more mountable. No joke, I learned that at a Louboutin exhibit at the FIT gallery. Anyway, think of lash primer as the high heels of your face routine. Not necessary, but they make a big difference. I rely on They’re Real by Benefit.  It keeps your lashes flexible yet noticeable, and it lasts a deceptively long time because you just need one layer. I repurchase every 5-6 months. Start your cycle <a href="https://www.sephora.com/product/they-re-real-tinted-lash-primer-P403707?icid2=products%20grid:p403707:product" target="_blank" rel="noopener">here</a> for $25.</div>

<h3><strong>One Fine Line Liner</strong></h3>
<div>I’ve never met an automatic eyeliner that I deemed acceptable, until this one. Bare Mineral’s One Fine Line gets to the point without bothering with that sharpener that always leaves a trail of tears all over… well, everything. Wintertime might be all questionably foggy skies and flurried, wintry mixes, but this perfect little point will be at least one thing you can count on. I fell in love with this product when once again, when my friends at Zoe’s in Greenpoint said those fateful, life-changing words, &#8220;I have something I want you to try.&#8221; For God’s sake ladies, please don’t start selling drugs. I use this liner on my bottom lashline and underneath and in between my top lashes, or when I don’t have the steady hand required or instense need for the liquid liner listed below. Get yours at Zoe&#8217;s or <a href="https://www.bareminerals.com/eye-makeup/eyeliners/one-fine-line-micro-precision-eyeliner---straight-spice/US87361.html?gclid=CjwKCAjwopTYBRAzEiwAnU4kbxFWUqwGTi3W58WdMgDRgOWR1hICt6LTFlMvteHO85ZiPPqVUuZk_RoC4T0QAvD_BwE&amp;cm_mmc=g-_-bm-ecom-_-allscreen-_-BareMinerals_Low_F17_Google_SEM_ALL_Shopping_Eye&amp;dclid=CNbCuZLBnNsCFQK6yAodjvQJyQ&amp;campaign=BareMinerals_Low_F17_Google_SEM_ALL_Shopping_Eye&amp;kw=-&amp;device=c&amp;gclsrc=aw.ds&amp;adgroup=BareMinerals_Low_F17_Google_SEM_ALL_Shopping_Eye_All%20Eye">here</a> for $18.</div>

<div>I know what you’re thinking- wtf Liz, you’ve been telling us for years that you’ll never stray from Kat Von D’s Tattoo Liner. And I haven’t, exactly. Point blank, no one can touch the ease of use of a tattoo artist’s eyeliner brainchild. But, Pat McGrath’s Perma Precision goes on darker and lasts longer and doesn’t do that weird build-up thing if you have to go over it again. (If you don’t know what I mean, don’t worry about it.) This liner is so precise though, it’s admittedly hard to tame if you’ve had too much coffee or if, I don&#8217;t know, you&#8217;re boyfriend is impatiently pacing around the apartment and looking at his watch over and over again. But once you get used to it, you’ll stick with it and it will stick on you all day, all night, and into the next if you’re lazy or hungover. Get it <a href="https://www.sephora.com/product/perma-precision-liquid-eyeliner-P429405" target="_blank" rel="noopener">here</a> now from Sephora for $28.</div>

<div>
<h3><strong>Makeup Forever Aqua Brow</strong></h3>
<div>If you didn’t know, I got a botched microblade job. Yeah. I have misshaped brows for at least the next two years because my greedy little face agreed to a free microblading session in Bensonhurst. And now I have to overcompensate the top of one and fill in only the bottom of the other in order to prevent people from thinking I have a pressing question all the time. Makeup Forever’s Aqua Brown goes on like a paint, giving you full control of your brows (unless you’ve already relinquished that control to a woman in Bensonhurst, of course) and it’s waterproof, sweatproof, biking-in-the-snow-proof, and ice-bucket-challenge proof, if that’s a thing you’re still doing. For MLS of course. Get yours ASAP for $23 from <a href="https://www.sephora.com/product/aqua-brow-P375462" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Sephora</a>; it’s hard for them to keep this product stocked. For real. Don’t doubt me because I look inquisitive.</div>
<div></div>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<div></div>
<h3><strong>Anastasia Brow Gel</strong></h3>
<div>Did I mention some woman in Bensonhurst left me with misshaped brows? Well, she did. And hopeful, unblade-faced me had no idea how easy it used to be to fill and shape my brows. Thanks to Anastasia, I can tame my furrowed brows effectively when I look in the mirror and get angry at this woman. You know it’s the best name in the brow biz, and this clear brow gel helps add depth and precision, without the incisions!<img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/17.0.2/72x72/2122.png" alt="™" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" /> Get yours <a href="https://www.sephora.com/product/brow-gel-P69304?icid2=products%20grid:p69304:product" target="_blank" rel="noopener">here</a> now for $22.</div>

<h4><strong>LIPS</strong></h4>
<h3><strong>Buxom Plumping Balm</strong></h3>
<div>I prefer a bare lip. For some reason, with a few minor exceptions, I’ve always felt like a drag queen in almost any lip color. I prefer bold eyes and a demure, natural lip. However, mine could use a little help. Fortunately a stellar plumper was Buxom&#8217;s flagship product and the one that consistently getting them noticed by beauty bloggers, people who have never been kissed, and vampires since 2017. Unlike every other plumper on the market (I can’t prove this but still, I know) this one doesn’t rely on micro-irritations to plump that leave your lips chafed for weeks. I don’t know how it works, but I know it does. It keeps my lips plumped. moisturized, slightly pinker, and wholly noticed. Pick one up at Zoe&#8217;s in Greenpoint or <a href="https://www.sephora.com/product/powerplump-lip-balm-P420163" target="_blank" rel="noopener">here</a> from Sephora for $18.</div>

It’s a word of caution from a former fashion industry veteran who really should have known better. It’s a command that we all take a step back and recognize that we are so deeply under the influencer.</div>
<div></div>
<h4></h4>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<div></div>
<div>I was one of tens of thousands of people who got duped into ordering a *free* bikini from Folsom &amp; Co, an Instagram company that ran impossible promotions and relied on user-generated content from influencers or what we used to refer to as “models” and also who we used to pay cash to, not just freebies, to build a brand and a company that did not exist.</div>
<div></div>
<h4></h4>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<div></div>
<div>I ordered <a href="https://folsomshop.com/collections/swimwear/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">this bikini top</a> in April, accepting the 2-4 week shipping window, confident that it would at least arrive before my trip to Florida in 6 weeks. It’s October. I still haven’t received the goddamn bikini. It was advertised as “free” plus $10 shipping which I happily paid, entering my credit card information into a clicked-through web page upon which I ignored all of the warning signs of this being a legit business. There were typos. This website had clearly never been tested for UX design. All of the images were from Instagram. It was the virtual equivalent of every “secret” shop you get led into through a door behind a sketchy store in Chinatown, where they keep the “real” Louis Vitton’s. But I ignored the warning signs. I wanted my tits to look like the tits in the picture. I wanted that bikini.</div>
<div></div>
<h4></h4>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<div></div>
<div>And after all, it was *free*.</div>
<div></div>
<h4></h4>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<div></div>
<div>After receiving the news that I knew was coming last night from the official Folsom &amp; Co., I anticlimactically filled out a slapdash Google survey they sent out detailing my experience and hit send.</div>
<div></div>
<h4></h4>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<div></div>
<div>I’ll never get that money back. I’ll never get that bikini. My tits will never look like the tits in the photo, and I knew that all along. So how did I and SO MANY OTHERS fall for this?</div>
<div></div>
<h4></h4>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<div></div>
<div>We’ve reached a point now when marketing and exposure precede manufacturing. None of these products exist until “companies” or brands are certain they resonate with audiences, and then by alerting buyers that products will require 2-4 weeks shipping time (read: manufacturing time), business is led by and defined through our double taps, comments, and click-throughs. When that supply chain goes from simply manufacturing to all of a sudden meeting the demand for tens of thousands of bikini tops, including fabric manufacturing, pattern cutting, mass dying, chemical finishings, packaging arrangements, logistical coordination, and so many other things that have to happen before our products get to us, it takes a 2-4 week grace period of manufacturing into a “company”-wide tailspin and logistical nightmare that ends in surrender. That $10 shipping may have covered the cost to manufacture 5000 bikinis from pre-sourced, sunken cost and premeditated agreements, but 10,000? Once suppliers recognize you have a highly desired product, arrangements change, deals are broken, supplies are unavailable, and commitments to customers are long forgotten.</div>
<div></div>
<h4></h4>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<div></div>
<div>Here’s what we should have learned by now, and how to protect ourselves in the future.</div>
<div></div>
<h4></h4>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<div></div>
<h4><strong>Recognize the dangers of “false” Instagram-only companies.</strong></h4>
<div>&#8211; All of the photos on their website are also user-generated content and influencer-created media</div>
<div>&#8211; The website isn’t nearly as attractive as the Instagram gallery</div>
<div>&#8211; All web copy is littered with typos</div>
<div>&#8211; Reviews focus on the 2-4 week delay in shipping, such as, “I didn’t even mind waiting a few weeks, I love my bikini top! It’s just as pictured!” Not one word regarding customer service, quality of product, or any genuine sounding voices</div>
<div></div>
<h4></h4>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<div></div>
<h4><strong>Determine if this “business” is trend-driven and product-focused or concentrated on building a brand.</strong></h4>
<div>Remember what a pre-Instagram business is. How did we vet it and why did we believe in it? Put yourself back into this mindset without being tempted by photos. Keep in mind that marketing should happen after the product has been created. Market research, testing, presentation, alterations, manufacturing, and strategic marketing, including social media. It does not work in the opposite order. Look for a noticeable strategy, the introduction of a new season, a mind behind the madness of the media.</div>
<div></div>
<h4></h4>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<div></div>
<h4><strong>Be hyper-aware of too-good-to-be-true promotions.</strong></h4>
<div>If you have to ask yourself, is this too-good-to-be-true? Yes. Yes, it is.</div>
<div></div>
<h4></h4>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<div></div>
<h4><strong>Too much focus on “shipping time” </strong></h4>
<div>They are manufacturing products based on demand. This is likely not a real company.</div>
<div></div>
<h4></h4>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<div></div>
<h4><strong>If you’ve been victimized</strong></h4>
<div><a href="https://www.bbb.org/us/ca/los-gatos/profile/ecommerce/folsom-co-1216-755491/complaints" target="_blank" rel="noopener">file a complaint with the Better Business Bureau</a>.</div>
<div></div>
<h4></h4>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<div></div>
<h4><strong>To protect yourself in the future, PAY WITH PAYPAL. </strong></h4>
<div>You will still be bikini-less, ( #freethenipple ) but you will get your shipping cost refunded.</div>
<div></div>
<h4></h4>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<div></div>
<h4><strong>Let’s be honest</strong></h4>
<div>We all really still want the bikini. Because somehow imagery has now surpassed our desire to understand the reality of a company. Instagram has completely changed our perspective on our bodies, on real life, on the power of product placement, and on our own vulnerability. And there are thousands of “brands&#8221; out there ready to capitalize on our inability to separate our desire for our lives to mimic Instagram from our better judgment.</div>
<div></div>
<h4></h4>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<div></div>
<div>So file your complaint, and think more clearly while you’re scrolling.</div>
<div></div>
<h4></h4>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<div></div>
<div>Folsom &amp; Co, you should be ashamed of yourselves. Also though if you do have any of those bikinis left…</div>
<div></div>
<h4></h4>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<div></div>
<div>Dammit, I mean. Ugh, fuck you!</div>

I haven’t curled or straightened my hair in years, and my beauty routine is really not a routine at all- wash every 5-7 days, pump with dry shampoo, brush before bed and when I wake up, and mask damage with a few pumps of Oi oil to make it look like I (hair)care. And haircuts? I usually wait for a sign. That sign hit me by my hands and brush hitting the walls of my tiny Brooklyn bathroom as I tried to blow dry it the past few weeks. I realized that my long hair had outgrown my living arrangements. It was time to take action.</div>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<div></div>
<div>I contacted Nackie Karcher, the brains, namesake, and creative force behind The Karcher in Greenpoint, for input.</div>
<div></div>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<div>I was led to her because Nackie and her salon had become an institution in the neighborhood. The devout testimonials I’d heard over the years made me curious, and her approach to hair and style seemed to match my lifestyle flawlessly. Growing up both in St. Petersburg and Key West Florida, Nackie&#8217;s attitude towards hair is reminiscent of her coastal roots; natural and no-fuss, concentrating on styles that balance facial structure and hair type instead of chasing a look that will take hours to tame and tons of products to maintain.</div>
<div></div>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<div>When I contacted her, she agreed to meet but made a request. “Trust me to do whatever I want,” she said. &#8220;I’m always looking for a muse.&#8221;</div>
<div></div>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<div>My immediate reaction was obviously, hell no. I’ve always felt that my hair was a signature part of my look. I’d worn it long and wild ever since the one bob I had at the age of 5 when I was mistaken for a boy at Disney World. After that, I instated the hairstyle that would definitively define me for the next 25 years. “Long layers, only cut off enough to make it look healthy,” I’d said to so many stylists in so many hydraulic chairs.</div>
<div></div>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<div>When I had time to think it over, I felt the frustration that happens when anyone doesn’t trust an artist enough to do their craft. When someone &#8220;edits&#8221; a piece that I’ve written so much that all that exists anymore is red rewrites and punctuation, or when a guest extensively looks over the cocktail menu and asks me in detail about the concentration of our herbal infusions and where we source our ice before finally saying, “You know what? I’ll have a vodka soda.”</div>
<div></div>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<div>Nothing is more frustrating than feeling deliberately untrusted to execute the craft that you have so passionately devoted yourself to.</div>
<div></div>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<div>“I love this idea,” I told her. “Let’s do it.”</div>
<div></div>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<div>And then I found myself half-holding on to my tangibly-long brown hair as I biked to The Karcher this past Sunday. I walked up the stairs hesitantly into what I feared could be the end of me, hair-wise, and towards what I hoped would be the best haircut of my life.</div>
<div></div>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<div>When I sat down in the non-hydraulic, vintage leather chair in front of Nackie, everything felt different. For one, I wasn’t staring back at my head unnaturally sticking out from a creepy vinyl cape; I was wearing a colorful kimono-esque robe. “You aren’t a mannequin,” she told me. “I need to see your body too when I’m imagining a style for you, not just a floating head.”</div>
<div></div>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<div>She began a series of movements, twisting and squeezing and observing the way my hair naturally lays. “I want to totally shag it out,” she said. And the 1970s vibe of the space and her overall demeanor gave me the confidence that this was a good idea. “I won’t cut anything shorter than your cheekbones here, but it will create a shape that has tons of volume and depth,” she told me. I looked in the mirror and at myself and my 20” of dead, heavy hair. It was apparent that I needed a good shag.</div>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<div></div>
<div>Then she got to work, washing my hair with <a href="https://www.hairstory.com/catalogue/new-wash_1/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Hair Story&#8217;s New Wash</a>, a cleansing cream that yields conditioner useless. It’s a detergent-free product that nourishes as it cleans instead of stripping your hair of its natural oils, a no-suds approach to cleansing that replenishes a lifetime’s worth of shampoo damage that you didn’t know you had. It felt like a full hair baptism that I decided relinquished me of most of my other sins as well.</div>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<div></div>
<div>When I sat down with her in the chair, she began razoring through my hair in a rather haphazard yet calculated manner, twisting and turning and pulling the hair to see how it would react. I saw her creating a loose frame for my face as she began to paint a picture of her life in the neighborhood I’d now accepted as my home. “I met my husband when we were both living in a converted loft space on Greene Street,” she told me. “We started dating and moved in together. Then we got a dog, then we had to kids, and we still live there now, on the same block.”</div>
<div></div>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<div>I let this sink in as she fussed over my hair, this perfect little Greenpoint love story. I realized that this is why we are drawn to Brooklyn; we are pulled here by energy and curiosity but kept here by the feeling of community, of real human connectivity, of creating some sort of sanctuary on a little block in Greenpoint from which so much of our lives will transpire, eventually maybe into new lives.</div>
<div></div>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<div>She started to blow dry my hair, using only her fingers to define my natural, yet oft-hidden, waves. She squeezed and twisted and every so often and started to form this perfect 70s-esque shag style that fit right in with the funky interior of the salon &#8211; palm tree murals, statement lighting, gold accents and a revived-disco era feel that made me feel cooler just by being there. And now I also looked cooler.</div>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<div></div>
<div>She worked more as a sculptor forming clay instead of a stylist taming hair, creating a sustainable look that wasn’t going to disappear once I left the black armchair. She added a bit of Hairstory spray powder to boost my layers and gave my hair a healthy bit of definition that I couldn’t stop playing with. I left realizing how much I had been holding myself and my style back for years with the phrase, “Long layers, only cut off enough to make it look healthy,” instead by changing it to, “I trust you. Do whatever you want.” And also, looking exactly like Stana Katic in <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lCZ6grP4qBc" target="_blank" rel="noopener" data-saferedirecturl="https://www.google.com/url?q=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v%3DlCZ6grP4qBc&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1537374663186000&amp;usg=AFQjCNFJHWvIiwRwK5uBLy_WVITqO7Is-w">For Lovers Only</a>, just two weeks before I leave for Paris.</div>
