sunday in brooklyn and i have a lot in common. the restaurant, not the actual day. come on… do you think i have a lot in common with regret, depression, a loss of dignity and wallets? nope. but sunday in brooklyn with it’s bright, charming, and irresistible nature, also has an anniversary here in our fair borough in on halloween… just like me. celebrating a fledgling 1 year (compared to my 7) they still have a hell of a lot to celebrate and will be doing so with a freakshow halloween party and cocktail party complete with sideshow acts like snake dancing, sword swallowing, and stilt walking, festive punch, pumpkin kegs, tarot card readings, flash tattoos, the best small bites and vampire bites and djs all night. tickets and costumes required, one of which can be found right here. 348 wythe ave.

Halloween Dance Party at the Diamond in Greenpoint.

the diamond is always the best answer. It’s one of the last good bars in north Brooklyn, devoid of douche bags despite its relative closeness to the kent ave waterfront, and it’s withstood the test of time year after year after now ten years. It’s a diamond in the rough, and the rotating tap of microbrews always finish smooth. tonight they host their annual halloween dance party with music from dj super bueno, $1 all drafts for folks in costumes, and $5 chili dogs and tots for all. info here, 9pm-1am, 43 franklin st.

Last Minute Halloween Costume Destinations in Brooklyn

So you waited until the last minute to pull together a Halloween costume. Again.

I swear I have all of my BEST costume ideas on November 1st. But the entire month of October? Nothing. I’m totally blank.

Lucky for us, we live in Brooklyn. And that means our options for finding weird relative cheap shit that we can fashion into something wearable are disproportionately high. And the chance that you know someone with a sewing machine, bedazzler, hot glue gun, power drill, or impressive amount of adhesives is also quite high. (hint: I have all of those things.) As a self-proclaimed queen of pulling something together from nothing, here’s a list of places to rummage through to find something that will make you look unidentifiable enough that you feel safe getting recklessly drunk this Halloween.

Wonders of Walter, Williamsburg

Oh man. I don’t know who exactly Walter is and I often wonder how the hell he accumulated this eclectic collection of consignment but what I do know is you will find it there. anything and everything and especially something costume worthy, i popped by today and he was busy shuffling through and curating a costume collection. “this one is perfect, i just came up with this an hour ago,” he said pulling out a vintage t-shirt that read protect your skin “dress yourself as a zombie and wear this. it’s so simple!” he said laughing. “or this, for a couple,” pulling out two african outfits, plus a tiger-print onesie “for their friend.” this “grand vintage pop-stop” on berry street is the answer for all of your last-minute costume needs, plus a hell of a lot of other needs you didn’t quite know you had. wed-thurs 2-8pm, fri-sat noon-8pm. 131 berry st.

Goblin Market NYC, Greenpoint

In brooklyn we don’t do flashy Halloween pop-ups and we rarely frequent chain shops. We are appalled by synthetic fabrics stuffed in a plastic bag that cost $75 and thus would never put them on our bodies. We’re smarter and cooler than that, and even on a holiday that encourages people to alter their normal state, that still won’t shake our impenetrable conscious-consumer tendencies or inherent coolness. however, we do still need places to buy things to get into the halloween spirit. Goblin Market NYC is basically the exact opposite of Ricky’s. And you are the exact opposite of a customer at Ricky’s. visit this little pop-up space on Frankie street for macabre goods and decor for the person who wants to dive deeper into the halloween spirit. and yes, it’s conveniently located right beside duke’s liquor box, so you can buy a little something to keep you warm on halloween too. noon-8pm, every day until halloween. 170 franklin st.

Dusty Rose Vintage, Greenpoint

There is no lack of vintage and second-hand shops in greenpoint, but this one stands out for its pricing and chance at discovering some really amazing finds. Filled with bins that are marked by price points, whatever costume you dig out, you’ll leave feeling like a champion. thurs-sat noon-7pm, sun noon-6pm. 251 greenpoint ave.

Beacon’s Closet, Williamsburg

Ok there’s nothing I can say here that you don’t already know about beacon’s closet. So you know that their collection is funky and it’s merchandised by color so you’ll naturally gravitate towards whatever draws you in. Prices can be steep considering everything is used and has that… smell. (you know that smell.) so choose one or two items that you can build around. Trust me, this will be your little beacon of costume hope. 11am-8pm 7 days a week. 74 guernsey st.

A Burner’s Closet, every ‘hood in Brooklyn

No, no this isn’t some hot new vintage spot, it’s literally the closet of someone you know who has gone to burning man. Mad max, a mad scientist, a dusty superhero, a doomsday prepper. Guaranteed to find any of these options and so much more. Plus, most items likely have unique pockets and places to hide your drugs.

Big Trash Day, Sundays in North Brooklyn

I am so surprised at the amount of brooklynites who don’t know about this. Big trash day is the day in each neighborhood when most of the limitations on trash are lifted and you can throw almost anything. It’s my favorite day of the week and the last one of the month is always the best because people are moving and way less reluctant to hold on to their things. This Sunday is Big Big trash day in north Brooklyn, so cruise around and score some shwag.

Madrid. Indie rock.the Warsaw in greenpoint. These might be three of the greatest things I’ve seen smashed together outside two pieces of toasted bread ever in my life. And it’s all culminating in real life Friday night. Insanely talented and prolific indie rock mamacitas HINDS rock out in our beloved former polish social club the Warsaw. Dope. Shit. Happens. Here. And. Also. On. Halloween. This party starts in a secret location in bushwick for light hors d’oeuvres and gently speculative conversation among strangers in strange attire before we will all be riskily whiskied then whisked off to the paper factory hotel in long island city for a spectacular evening for a variety show of defined proportions, an experience never to write home about, a night to try to remember and impossible to forget that is lost somewhere in the ether among closed eyes and inhales and exhales and full body shudders. Boat cruises don’t die with summertime. They live on in our hearts forever. And sometimes, on magical and mystical weekends in October,they live on amid the spooky tides of the east river. AND THAT IS HAPPENING THIS WEEKEND. just for yiu. 2am cruise is keeping us afloat with their Halloween blowout, at Lot45? And maybe also on a boat? I’m admittedly confused about this event but also i’m currently flying above the pacific ocean so I think I’m doing ok. By land or sea or snow or hail or whatever the fuck let’s just all go to this event ok? Indie, electro,mail hop, prince. An alt-tastic Halloween party of royal proportions, anything goes as long as you’re going. Costumes or your usual funky-fresh garb. get down with your bad self. everything you need to know is here. 10pm-4am, 790 metropolitan at death disco- where they out the BOO! in boogie down, baby.

Chick Flicks and Coloring Party at Threes Brewing, Gowanus.

I’ll admit it: the only things I like more than the movie Practical Magic is the soundtrack to Practical Magic, impractical magic, and breweries in Brooklyn. however. I strongly dislike adult coloring books. but come and watch this film and support this brewery and always expand your creative endeavors beyond the boundaries of black lines and culturally defined gender roles. there will also be tarot card readings, witchy costumes (if you want!), and a portion of all proceeds go toward the center of domestic violence in Brooklyn, which is certainly something i can get behind. also- MIDNIGHT MARGARITAS. 630-935pm, $13, added color here. 333 Douglass st, at threes brewing- i’ll try anything thrice.

Stranger Things (with candy!) at Littlefield, Gowanus.

Full disclosure: I have no idea what is party is really about. What I do know is it’s a party based on that show everyone has been talking about. That is super 80s, and as I would imagine, and distinctively odd. Head to littlefield for plenty of 80s tunes all night, a supernatural photographic experience, video projections, Christmas lights, multiple eggos and minimal egos (come on its gowanus), and a costume contest of epically nostalgic proportions.1030pm, tickets $5-8 etc etct etc if you’re nervous just read here 622 degraw st.

SATURDAY

18th Annual Pupkin Dog Costume Fest at Fort Greene Park.

New York so often helps you feign the life you can’t actually afford to have here. It’s this constant and addictive juxtaposition, the feeling of exactly everything desirable existing just at your fingertips. come to the 18th annual pumpkin dog costume fest at fort Greene park. Because you neither have the time or the money to have a dog, so instead let’s look a other people’s dogs then go home to our cats. who don’t do costumes. 1130-2pm, $10. Greenwood Cemetery Spirited Walks, Sunset Park.

Fact: there are more dead people than alive in Brooklyn. And given the rising rents and relentlessly floating spirits present in all our lives, this isn’t hard to believe. Well get into it (the spirits, that is!) on all levels at our beloved geeenwood cemetery Saturday. guided tours featuring tales of murder, mayhem, spirits and terry bizarre happenings and include a visit insist he catacombs, a twisted monument to the wizard of oz, and plenty of Brooklyn stories of people being takin off tha menu! In our city. The events that even stefon would have trouble making up. This is the fucking reason. And one such lands upon us just in Time on the spookiest of weekends. It’s a space-themed party. In the year 3000. Featuring you and me and all our friends practicing the ancient art of time travel and utter disregard for anything more than the present and very distant future. Floating and jiving and living and dying and loving. Because time is fucking relative. have chance encounters with alien extravaganzas, take in intergalactic aerial performances, be whisked away at abduction stations, catch a glimpse of unidentified floating objects and taste strange edible delights from alien food.
