the weekend guide | 27-31 october 2016

in CULTURE, weekend guide
sure, maybe halloween seems contrived. maybe you’re over it. maybe you think it’s stupid. maybe you feel that life in brooklyn allows you the uninhibited liberty to be someone else, everyday. to dress in costume, to speak with an accent, to make bad decisions under the shroud of alter egos. cool. well. this weekend the whole borough won’t politely ignore you. we will applaud you can’t celebrate you and join you because it’s halloween. and this is how,we’ll do it, brooklyn.

deception is at the heart of halloween and hustlers alike, so come on and let’s get spooky, together.

Cut Copy Spins at Good Room, Greenpoint.

who cares if it’s raining. not you. because cut copy is spinning all night at good room and you want to cut a rug. do it, right now. here’s how98 meserole st at good room- my favorite place to do bad things.™

Dirty Thursday Zombie Beach Party at House of Yes, Bushwick.
I know you got a little spooky groove in ya, given the time of year and that unmistakeable feeling in the air. and so let’s keep them guessing, Friday at work, if we’re half dead or half alive? I won’t tell if you don’t. Dirty thursdays at house of yes this week brings you a very appropriate zombie beach party. Be here, be present, be undead, feel alive. There’s an insane description of the event here. entry is free so come get lost here from 10pm-4am and then everywhere else. . 2 wyckoff ave at the house of OH NO YOU DI’INT.

“so what happened was…” storytelling at Freddy’s,  Park Slope.
Mmm. You know you love the moth. And that fucking fantastic moth joke. And stories, of all kinds. Because we are nothing but raconteurs, all. Come then to Freddy’s Thursday night for a very the moth-like story telling showcase, except all stories must be about something that occurred to the storyteller within the past week. event is free, more info here. 7-9pm, 627 fifth ave, at Freddy’s- where what happened was… you and me and everything.

Hinds plays the Warsaw in Greenpoint.
Madrid. Indie rock.the Warsaw in greenpoint. These might be three of the greatest things I’ve seen smashed together outside two pieces of toasted bread ever in my life. And it’s all culminating in real life Friday night. Insanely talented and prolific indie rock mamacitas HINDS rock out in our beloved former polish social club the Warsaw. Listen to this song on repeat then buy your tickets right here baby. Trust me it will feel good. Then find me there and let’s believe in rock and roll again. Pregame at my spot followed by show at 7pm, tickets $20. 261 driggs ave. because in HINDS sight it’s always been you.
Ghost Dog No. 1 at Good Room Greenpoint.
DFA records brings us a spooky version of their beloved hot dog party. no hot dogs, just some of the best djs in the hood. and the promise of “special guests” always, always tempts me… because you know. all info here, 9pm-4am. 98 meserole st.

Junxion Crossroads: A Haunted Masquerade at the Paper Factory Hotel in LIC.
Dope. Shit. Happens. Here. And. Also. On. Halloween. This party starts in a secret location in bushwick for light hors d’oeuvres and gently speculative conversation among strangers in strange attire before we will all be riskily whiskied then whisked off to the paper factory hotel in long island city for a spectacular evening for a variety show of defined proportions, an experience never to write home about, a night to try to remember and impossible to forget that is lost somewhere in the ether among closed eyes and inhales and exhales and full body shudders. This is it. your best chance to make bad decisions this weekend. masked in good intentions, of course. 8pm-4am,  $20-75 tickets and details for common mortals here37-06 36th st at the paper factory, where things always unfold. or something.
2amCruise’s Halloween Blowout at Lot45, Bushwick.
Boat cruises don’t die with summertime. They live on in our hearts forever. And sometimes, on magical and mystical weekends in October, they live on amid the spooky tides of the east river. AND THAT IS HAPPENING THIS WEEKEND. just for yiu. 2am cruise is keeping us afloat with their Halloween blowout, at Lot45? And maybe also on a boat? I’m admittedly confused about this event but also i’m currently flying above the pacific ocean so I think I’m doing ok. By land or sea or snow or hail or whatever the fuck let’s just all go to this event ok? Costume contest and dope djs all night. tickets $5-15 found here. 10pm-4am, 411 troutman st at lot 45, where even if you ask for a lot, you get 45.

Death Disco at Legion Bar, Williamsburg.
Indie, electro, mail hop, prince. An alt-tastic Halloween party of royal proportions, anything goes as long as you’re going. Costumes or your usual funky-fresh garb. get down with your bad self. everything you need to know is here. 10pm-4am, 790 metropolitan at death disco- where they out the BOO! in boogie down, baby.
Chick Flicks and Coloring Party at Threes Brewing, Gowanus.
I’ll admit it: the only things I like more than the movie Practical Magic is the soundtrack to Practical Magic, impractical magic, and breweries in Brooklyn. however. I strongly dislike adult coloring books. but come and watch this film and support this brewery and always expand your creative endeavors beyond the boundaries of black lines and culturally defined gender roles. there will also be tarot card readings, witchy costumes (if you want!), and a portion of all proceeds go toward the center of domestic violence in Brooklyn, which is certainly something i can get behind. also-  MIDNIGHT MARGARITAS. 630-935pm,  $13, added color here. 333 Douglass st, at threes brewing- i’ll try anything thrice.™
Stranger Things (with candy!) at Littlefield, Gowanus.
Full disclosure: I have no idea what is party is really about. What I do know is it’s a party based on that show everyone has been talking about. That is super 80s, and as I would imagine, and distinctively odd. Head to littlefield for plenty of 80s tunes all night, a supernatural photographic experience, video projections, Christmas lights, multiple eggos and minimal egos (come on its gowanus), and a costume contest of epically nostalgic proportions.1030pm, tickets $5-8 etc etct etc if you’re nervous just read here 622 degraw st.

what i’m doing this weekend… that i hope all melts together into one big monster mash.

first- STOP EVERYTHING and watch this to get you in the mood for a spooky-scary good weekend

Midwest vs NYC (and i’m not talking about baseball…)
i thought the only good thing about the midwest was that it’s the inspiration behind my favorite neighborhood bar? oh, there’s more to it? come see natives of both sides defend their case. 7-9pm at word book store, 126 franklin ave. more info here, ya?
this is even more relevant given our the intensifying situation between us and kansas. #letsfuckinggomets.

colder weather doesn’t have to mean the end of outdoor(ish) films.
Rooftop Film Series at the bushwick generator- check out a variety of spooky short films and the debut of season 2 of “the returned” plus cocktails by new amsterdam vodka and ommegang brewery beers. live music at 830, event free with an rsvp. which can be found right here.

loosen up and summon some spirits because spooky yoga is happening again- this week, even spookier. more info here.

let’s face it- today will likely be spent scrambling around, trying to throw together a last-minute costume attempt. here are some brooklyn stores that can help, without having to battle the insane lines today at ricky’s:
artists + craftsman supply– for all (literally, all) of your crafting needs at insane prices. two entire floors. 761 metropolitan ave.
b.e. yarn– for the seamstress or person who knows one. all of your notions for pulling something together at the last minute. 784 manhattan ave.
workmate and contractor’s aid outlet– seriously. insane the amount of crazy stuff they have here. you will fine something amazing to put on and go out. trust me. 222 calyer st.
dusty rose vintage– vintage finds at thrist store prices. if you can’t find it here, you are destined to dress up as an uncreative, boring individual for halloween. 251 greenpoint ave.
we live in new york. which means halloween, as every single day of the year, presents a choose-your-own-adventure buffet of activities.

Zombie Jamboree
if you’re looking for more of a dark-festival type of party this weekend, check out the zombie jamboree at lot 45 in buschwick. five performances, tarot card readings, face painting, and $100 cash to the best zombie costume. friday, 8pm-4am, $15. get your spook on.

get down and be yourself before you are someone else tomorrow night at the always funky retro-soul dance party at bahche in park slope. check out and warm up for tomorrow. let loose, go wild- no one will recognize you tomorrow. 191 7th st, park slope. no cover, enough said. (but here’s more just in case.)
